PCOS and PCOD difference
Some people may consider these two conditions polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and polycystic ovarian disorder (PCOD) the same. But they are not the same. However, their names are similar to some extent, they refer to different conditions.
What is PCOD?
The female reproductive system has two ovaries. Usually, these ovaries alternatively release an egg every month. The ovaries also produce male hormones and androgen in a small quantity. The ovary is meant to release a mature egg so that it can be fertilized with sperm during sexual intercourse. But in the PCOD condition, the ovaries release immature or partially-mature eggs instead of mature eggs. And these immature eggs over time turn into cysts.
Hope you have understood what PCOD is. A few of the common symptoms are irregular periods, weight gain and male pattern hair loss. The ovaries also expand in size and release androgen in large amounts. And the large amounts of androgen can have negative effects on a woman’s body and fertility.

What is PCOS?
Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a disorder of hormones, a disorder of metabolism of the endocrine system. Women with PCOS may have more androgen (a male hormone) than normal. It may also cause changes to menstrual periods, such as heavy bleeding, prolonged periods or frequent menstrual periods. Around the ovaries, numerous small follicles (collection of fluid) may also take place.
Small cysts may also develop in the ovaries because of PCOS. Being a metabolic disorder, PCOS can also grow worse as time passes. That is why an early diagnosis and treatment are crucial in order to save the patient from several complications which otherwise may take place.
Three main differences between PCOD and PCOS
- In comparison, PCOD is more common than PCOS. It is said that around one-third of the women in the world suffer from PCOD. A healthy diet and some exercise can also cure PCOD. But, PCOS needs proper treatment by a specialist because it is a disorder of the endocrine system.
- It is said that hormonal imbalances may cause PCOD. PCOS may be caused by a disturbance in the endocrine system.
- Polycystic ovarian disorder does not cause infertility in all women. And one should not consider it a total obstacle in pregnancy. It is said that even more than 80 percent of women with PCOD successfully conceive and carry a smooth pregnancy with a little aid.
But the in case of PCOS, its conception and carrying a smooth pregnancy can be quite challenging because of hormonal abnormalities.

PCOS and PCOD problems and ayurvedic treatment
What causes PCOS and PCOD? The exact causes of these conditions are still unknown. PCOD is also assumed to be genetic. Some say insulin resistance could also be responsible for it. Some research shows that a large number of women facing PCOD were also diagnosed to have insulin resistance. Obesity is also said to be a big reason for insulin resistance.
Obesity and insulin resistance together can enhance the risk of type 2 diabetes. And inflammation and obesity together could also be responsible for high levels of androgen.
There are several factors that are assumed to cause PCOS. These factors involve the production of insulin in excess, the production of androgen in excess, low-grade inflammation and heredity.
