What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a non contagious skin disease.
According to Ayurveda there are eighteen types of skin disease amongst which kitibh is compared with modern science disease psoriasis.
Kitibh (psoriasis) is a sanipataka disease i.e all three doshas are involved in occurrence of psoriasis. Major aggravating doshas are vata and kapha.
Symptoms of psoriasis
Psoriasis usually presents as a symmetrical plaque on extensor surfaces such as knees and elbows. The lower back, ears ans scalp are also commonly involved.
Psoriasis affects 2% of the population and is characterized by well demarcated, red scaly plaques covered in characteristic silver scale. Skin becomes inflamed and hyperproliferates to about ten times the normal rate.
The onset of disease is in two peaks of ages-
1. age 16-22 is common and associated with positive family history
2. age 55-60 is the late onset of the disease
disturbnces of nail bed may produce thick nails or separation of the nail from nail bed may occur in psoriasis.
Charak mentions the syptoms of psoriasis in the given shloka-
शयावं किनखर स्पर्श परुषं किटिमा स्मृतं || (charaka samhita sholka no 22)
shyawam (blackish brown discoloration of skin)
kinkharsparsha (rough to touch)
parusham (hard on touching)

What causes psoriasis?
According to Ayurveda apart from all three doshas (vata-pitta-kapha), twacha , rakta , maans, ambu are the seven matters involved in occurrence of psoriasis. Defect in any of the seven causes psoriasis.
In modern science the condition appears to be polygenic but is also dependent on certain environmental triggers. Exact cause in unknown.
Charaka identifies the following causes of psoriasis-
-intake of contradictory food, heavy and aliphatic drinks
-suppresion of natural urges like flatulence,urine,thirst etc
-exercising after heavy meal in excess heat
-intake of cold water after heavy exercise or exposure to sun .
-intake of food before the earlier taken meal is digested
-excessive intake of sour products
-sleeping at day time
These can be considered as a triggering factor which should be avoided during psoriasis treatment.
